Image: Khan takes on TINY lightweight Carlos Molina for December fightBy Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan finally announced who his December opponent will be and he’s choosing the little, light hitting 5’6″ Carlos Molina (17-0-1, 7 KO’s) instead of someone from his own division. A 5’6″ Molina vs. the 5’10” Khan equal huge mismatch.

The news of this fight has been greeted with happiness from a lot of clueless boxing fans who mistakenly think this is the JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT Carlos Molina, the one that recently fought James Kirkland. It’s not. I wish it was that version of Molina, but then again Khan would likely get dominated by that guy because he’s a really good fighter.

The Carlos Molina that Khan will be fighting is a lot smaller than the junior middleweight Molina and is currently ranked #10 by the WBO in the LIGHTWEIGHT division. I’ve seen a few of the tiny 5’6″ Molina’s fights have not been impressed at with him. He’s got no power and gets by on throwing combinations. He’ll be giving up four inches in height to Khan and likely even more reach.

I figured that Khan would take on a light hitter for his next fight, because he was smashed by WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia in his last fight in July, but I at least figured Khan would take on a light puncher from from his own division in the light welterweight division instead of facing a pooling from the lightweight ranks.

Nothing much to excited about with this fight. Molina is too small, can’t punch and never fought anyone in the upper tier. It’s a terrible mismatch. I wonder if HBO or Showtime will televise this. While I thought a rematch between Paul McCloskey and Khan was a laughable bout, this is even worse than that because Molina is a lot smaller than McCloskey, has little speed and no power to worry Khan.

Khan also announced that he’ll be trained by Virgil Hunter now, as if we didn’t already know. Hunter has been rumored to be Freddie Roach’s replacement for weeks now and Khan might as well have broke the news back then instead of holding off in revealing the news. Hunter also trains WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward. However, I hope Khan isn’t thinking that just because Hunter was able to make Ward a great fighter that he’ll be able to do the same with Khan.

Hunter had a lot to work with from the beginning with Ward, because he’s natural born fighter, blessed with amazing speed, a huge heart a great chin. Khan has good speed but I think his chin isn’t going to be able to let him find the success that Ward has, so I don’t see any change with Roach now replaced by Hunter.

It’s like musical chairs. Khan loses, his trainer is booted and it starts all over again with Khan babbling on about how the new trainer will make him a great fighter. Hunter is now going to be in the hot seat. I wonder how long he’ll last after Khan gets starched again? I think Khan should have just stuck it out with his original trainer because I don’t see any progress over the years with all the different he’s been with. Hunter will no doubt try to teach Khan some defense but he won’t be able to keep Khan from getting smacked in the puss every now and then, and that’s where Khan will likely continue to suffer knockout losses.
