According to Dan Rafael at ESPN, Arce priced himself out of what would have been a career payday against IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire by asking for $850,000 for the fight.

Rafael feels that Arce likely would have gotten half that number had he agreed to the fight but messed things up for himself by asking for too much money. Arce’s fight with the little known Martinez will likely make far below the $400,000 he could have made against Donaire, but then again there won’t be the same risk involved for Arce to lose. Martinez has lost four out of his last five fights and pretty much has no chance of beating the 33-year-old Arce.

Arce looked bad in his last fight against 25-year-old featherweight Jesus M Rojas last June in fighting to a 2nd round no contest after hitting the deck as result of a three punch combination thrown by Rojas. The shots landed to the side of Arce’s ear, his back and below the belt. Arce was in too much pain from the punch to the ear and the fight was halted. The shots were accidental from Rojas, so he was disqualified. However, a lot of boxing fans felt that Arce quit in the fight because Rojas was starting to take control of the fight and was landing with good power against the smaller Arce. Rojas just looked young, strong and unstoppable. Arce would have had big problems if the fight were to have continued.

Arce still remains a possibility for Donaire if the two fighters can win their next fights. Bob Arum, the promoter for Donaire, doesn’t seem in a hurry to match Donaire against the two best fighters at super bantamweight – Abner Mares and Guillermo Rigondeaux – and that leaves Arce as a good possibility for Donaire in the near future.
