This is going to be a huge fight, as Mares is one of the best fighters at super bantamweight, and Moreno, the WBA Super World bantamweight champion, is considered by many boxing fans to be the best fighter in the bantamweight division.

Moreno, 27, hasn’t had much in the way of competition down at bantamweight, beating guys like Vic Darchinyan, Nehomar Cermeno, Lorenzo Parra, Volodymyr Sydorenko and David De La Mora. The fact that the 5’6 1/2″ Moreno has to look for fights in the super bantamweight division tells you how dominant he’s been at bantamweight. There’s just no one there that can give him a good fight. We just saw that with Moreno’s compete domination of a very good fighter in Darchinyan. Moreno beat him with ease and made him look really bad in the process.

Mares, 26, won Showtimes’ bantamweight tournament last year, beating Darchinyan and Joseph Agbeko and fighting to a draw against Yonnhy Perez. Mares moved up in weight earlier this year in April, beating Puerto Rican Eric Morel by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision to capture the vacant World Boxing Council super bantamweight title.

It’s hard to say who’ll win the Mares-Moreno fight because both guys have been so dominant for so long. Mares will be giving up a couple of inches in height to Moreno and that could be a problem because Moreno uses his height and reach with great effectiveness. He’s not someone that can be lured into an inside war easily because he moves so well and is able to use his reach to out-box his opponents.
