How good is Andre Dirrell?

Image: How good is Andre Dirrell?By Steven Ocallaghan: It looks like Andre Dirrell will be facing WBA super middleweight Interim world champ Brian Magee in November, a fight I expect the younger man in Dirrell to triumph. But how good is Dirrell?

Since losing to Carl Froch back in 2009, Dirrell has only fought twice. 1st beating Arthur Abraham whose limits where badly shown up against against Froch, and then Darryl Cunningham. There’s no need to say any more about him.

Up until the Froch fight I really only witnessed Dirrell beating one decent fighter in Anthony Hanshaw. Hanshaw himself being in with good fighters losing a decision to Roy Jones Junior then beating Jean Paul Mendy who would go on and later challenge Lucien Bute.

Brian Magee retained the interim belt after a 5th round KO of Rudy Markussen in Denmark, and has arguably been in with the better class of fighter. He got himself into the position to face Robin Reid, Carl Froch and Lucian Bute ultimately losing all three but those 3 were before named fighters were all title holders at some point.

He also lost out to Vitaliy Tsypko for the EBU belt. Tsypko has been in with good fighters such as Librado Andrade and Jeff Lacy twice.

I don’t think it will be the most straightforward fight for Dirrell, but I can see him with a late stoppage as Magee will probably run out of gas. Of all the fighters he could face for a belt, he has picked the best option as Magee now 37 is past his best. Probably his best wouldn’t have been good enough anyway, but will this fight prove that Dirrell has earned another shot at Froch or a fight with Andre Ward. I don’t think so.
