Image: Brook vs. Saldivia: The winner of this fight gets the golden ticket, says KellBy Scott Gilfoid: #2 IBF welterweight contender Kell Brook (28-0, 18 KO’s) really dodged a bullet in his last fight against Carson Jones, winning a 12 round majority decision after getting his nose broken and losing most of the last six rounds of the fight.

Brook got the win, though, controversial as it was and will now move on to fight #3 IBF Hector David Saldivia (41-2, 32 KO’s) on October 20th in an IBF final welterweight eliminator bout at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Brook took a real pounding from Jones last July and probably deserved to either lose that fight or at least get a draw at best. Brook really fell apart after the 6th round and was running on fumes in the 2nd half of the fight. The pressure that Jones put on Brook seemed to drain his battery tanks to the point where Brook had nothing left in the last six rounds and was just running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off. It’s very lucky that Brook didn’t get knocked out in the 12th when Jones had him staggering around the ring.

Brook told Sky Sports News “I started training late [for the Jones fight]…and I definitely struggled with the weight. Having my nose broken didn’t help.”

That sounds like Brook has more than one excuse for the Jones fight, and I wish I could buy them but I can’t. The reason why Brook faded so badly was because Jones put a heck of a lot of pressure on him. This wasn’t the typical fodder opponent that Brook was lined up with like his bouts. He couldn’t adjust from the soft guys that his promoters have been feeding him his entire career, and when Jones didn’t let up in the second half of the fight, Brook totally ran out of gas.

Brook is working on his conditioning and his diet to make sure that he doesn’t fade again, but I see this problem staying the same no matter what Brook does. We may not see it as bad in this fight, because he’s taking on a guy with an inflated ranking, but we’ll see it as soon as Brook fights someone good again. He’ll beat Saldivia because this guy has no business of being ranked in the top 15 in my view. He’s a decent 2nd tier fighter, no better than that. It’s another spoon feeding for Brook. He’ll win this one but he’s not going anywhere. He’ll fight the winner of the Devon Alexander vs. Randall Bailey fight and get knocked out. That’s all that’s n the cards for Brook I hate to say.

Brook said “You are going to see me against Saldivia and the winner gets that golden ticket.”

Correction, the winner gets the ticket to get slaughtered and that’s all he gets.
