Bailey: I’m going to land my big right against Alexander

By Allan Fox: IBF welterweight champion Randall Bailey (43-7, 37 KO’s) is confident that he’s going to be able to land his huge right hand power shots against #4 IBF Devon Alexander (23-1, 13 KO’s) on September 8th at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, The Joint, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alexander figures that he’ll be able to make Bailey miss with best shots and then he’ll counter him with hard punches of his own. However, Bailey feels he’s going to connect with one of his big rights at some point in the fight, and then get Alexander out of there.

Bailey told RingTV “I’m lining these guys up for one punch…When it lands, it’s destructive. It’s not about how fast Devon is, he gets hit. He gets hit with right hands constantly. Every fighter he’s fought has hit him with right hands.”

This is definitely true. The southpaw Alexander does get hit with a lot of right hands in his fights. That’s the southpaw fighter’s one weakness, a lead right hand. What Alexander has done lately to keep from getting hit so much is turn to the punch and grab technique to slow the fight down to where there’s only time for him to get his shot off before he clinches his opponent.

There’s an art to this ugly way of fighting, and if you’re good at it you beat guys that you normally couldn’t beat if they were able to punch back at you. Bailey has never really fought anyone that did a lot of grabbing by nature.

The guys that have ended up grabbing Bailey have been fighters that were badly hurt from his right hand bombs and just looking to hold to survive. He’s not had to fight guys that are looking to clinch after throwing a punch like Alexander. This could be the real test for Bailey in how he adjusts to it.
