Image: Khan can do well if he avoids big punchers from now onBy William Mackay: If Amir Khan wants to make a ton of money and win a lot of titles in the process, he needs to focus on avoiding punches from here on out entirely. It’s really not all that hard to do, because look at what Khan accomplished after coming back from a 1st round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott in 2008.

Khan was able to beat a series of weak punching fighters and then luck out against the one guy that could punch in Marcos Maidana. Khan won the IBF and WBA light welterweight titles just by facing guys that either couldn’t punch or were too old to land their big shots, such as Zab Judah.

Khan’s chances of improving his fragile chin is slim and none. WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia really exposed Khan last month by knocking him out in the 4th round. Khan was exposed to the casual boxing fans, but not the hardcore because they already knew about Khan’s fragile chin, so it wasn’t any kind of surprise to see him getting knocked out again in this step up fight.

Each time Khan steps up against a dangerous puncher, he has problems. He did survive the Maidana fight, but you can make a strong argument that Khan wouldn’t have survived that fight if referee Joe Cortez wasn’t breaking the action in the 10th when Maidana was pounding Khan up against the ropes after hurting him. That very could have ended right there in that round had the referee stood and let the action go instead of breaking it up and separating Maidana from the hurt Khan.

The good news is Khan still make a massive amount of money because he’s got great hand speed, decent power and a big size advantage over most light welterweights. As long as he stays in the 140 pound division and is matched with utmost care to filter out sluggers like Mike Alvarado, Lucas Matthysse, and Danny Garcia, Khan should do alright.

All Khan needs is one decent fight against a weak puncher and then he might be able to get a nice cash out fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. It’s obviously going to have to be a fighter with a name so that the boxing public will figure that Khan is back. Khan needs someone like Erik Morales, Breidis Prescott, DeMarcus Corley, Robert Guerrero or Joan Guzman. One of those guys would be perfect for Khan, because they’re flawed enough to where he can probably beat them as long as he doesn’t run into any big shots.
