Image: Amir Khan's long road to redemptionBy Benny James: Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) the 2004 Olympic silver medallist and two time world champion has a long road ahead of him if he wants to reach the top again. He has now been knocked out twice and his insecurity and confidence issues are laid bare for the world to see on his twitter account. Instead of laughing off his “haters” he is giving them the time of day and responding.

So what should Khan do? Does he need a new trainer? Promoter? Manager? Or just to get rid of all his hangers on and yes men? Personally I think he needs a new trainer and to get rid of all his yes men who have hyped him up and convinced him he is the best when quite frankly he is a talented but equally flawed fighter who requires specialist training and strategic planning to regain the success he once enjoyed.

Amir needs to do what great fighters like Lennox Lewis did when they were defeated. He needs to get revenge. Below I am going to lay out a path that Amir Khan needs to walk to redeem himself as a true champion.

Amir Khan vs Breidis Prescott

This would be an easy fight for Khan. Prescott has some power but I think we can now safely say his power is overrated due to a padded record and a lucky shot against Khan in their 2008 fight. If somebody like Kevin Mitchell has the skills to school Prescott and avoid those shots, then Amir certainly could. This would make a great homecoming fight in Bolton, England.

Amir Khan vs Lamont Peterson

The original fight was close, but Amir should have got the victory, and that’s before you even start to look at the possibilities of Peterson using performance enhancing drugs or the controversy with the officials helping get the fight scored in his favour. Again Khan needs to use his skills and brain and stop trying to be some brave exciting fighter.

Amir Khan vs Danny Garcia

As you could see for the first 3 rounds of the original fight, Amir Khan has the speed and the skill required to defeat the flawed Garcia. If a level headed Amir could take Garcia into the later rounds I believe he has the ability to get the stoppage win. Danny is now been over-hyped due to his victory over the glass jawed Amir Khan. Using hit and move tactics, this is an easy night for Khan.

Amir Khan vs Adrien Broner

This suggestion will cause some controversy but I stand by it. Broner is a brilliant prospect, he has speed, skill, power and confidence. All the man needs now is a chance, a chance to prove himself and make a name for himself. I believe this would be a close but exciting fight, will Khans size and experience be enough to defeat the hungry prospect?

Amir Khan vs Timothy Bradley

Even if Amir was to win all the fights I have so far suggested, I don’t believe a fight with Bradley could ever be made. Bradley has had multiple chances to take the Khan fight but has turned them all down citing several excuses, mainly about money. Again I think this would be a close fight with both fighters possible victors. Shame it will never happen.

Amir Khan vs Floyd Mayweather

Now we are really talking a long shot here, but if Amir could avenge his losses, defeat a hungry prospect then get past Timothy Bradley, I believe he would have finally done enough to get the fight he has been talking about for years. The chance to defeat the best fighter of our generation, Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather is obviously past his prime, but he still boasts the skills needed to keep himself at the top of the pile until his retirement. Mayweather is a genius in the ring and its my belief he will adapt his style to keep at the top, or retire before he gets defeated. Amir would never stand a chance against Mayweather. I can see it now, Amir Khan trying to bum rush Mayweather and take his head off, all that will happen is Mayweather will counter and put Khan to sleep again.

So that’s it, that is the mountain Khan has to climb if he really wants to prove himself again. He could do it, but we all know he probably wont. Instead he will take a load of easy fights, capture a paper world title, then end up getting knocked out again.
