Khan should forget about ever fighting at 147

Image: Khan should forget about ever fighting at 147By William Mackay: Amir Khan’s latest defeat at the hands of WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia was enough to tell me that Khan isn’t cut out for fighting above 140 and he really needs to try and find a way to get back down to lightweight because it’s too dangerous for him to be fighting at 140.

It was a few weeks ago that Khan was talking about moving up to 147 after the Garcia fight so that he could go after a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. That’s dream stuff now, because the loss to Garcia showed clearly that Khan’s chin is too fragile for him to be fighting bigger punchers in the next weight class. If Khan is getting knocked out by light welterweights like Garcia and lightweights like Breidis Prescott, what do you think a welterweight would do to Khan if he connected with full force with one of his shots?

Khan would be leveled. When you’ve got a fighter that is struggling in a weight class like 140, you don’t want to move him up against bigger punchers and that’s what Khan will likely do in the near future. He’s going to stay at light welterweight and likely fight a couple of more times at this weight before moving up to 147. I think it’s a bad decision.

Khan needs to trim off some of that baby fat that’s collected around the sides of his waist and move back down to lightweight. He should just forget about Mayweather and try to make a go of it against the Mayweather-like Adrien Broner instead. That can be Khan’s Mayweather, and I don’t see him getting past a talent like Broner even with a size and speed advantage. But that’s definitely a direction Khan should be going in right now instead of heading more trouble at light welterweight or god forbid moving up to 147.
