Image: Victor Ortiz was smart to quitBy Daniel R: In an action packed fight last night a the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, Josesito Lopez caused an upset by breaking Victor Ortiz’s jaw in the first round causing Victor to eventually quit on his stool after the ninth.

Now inevitably this will raise the issue of heart, after appearing to quit against Maidana Victor Ortiz has been heavily criticized for lacking heart, even Josesito Lopez after the fight said Ortiz lacked heart however Ortiz was smart to quit.

What many people do not realise especially the general public are the implications of a broken jaw. Firstly Ortiz could not close his mouth, being hit in the jaw with your mouth open is painful enough but imagine getting hit with an open mouth whilst having a broken jaw by a professional boxer, Ortiz showed more than enough heart fighting toe to toe from round one with a broken jaw. Secondly breathing, a broken jaw can make it incredibly hard and painful to breath especially from your mouth which boxers do as they get tired. Lastly the long term effects, if Victor had carried on fighting we do not know what further damage could have been inflicted especially as Josesito Lopez was getting the better of the exchanges, not only could this have implications on Victor’s health but also his boxing career as he could be forced to take a break from training and boxing whilst he heals which could be months so even if Victor has won his fight with Canelo most probably would not have happened.

I can only feel sorry for Victor as he was ahead on all scorecards and considering he was fighting with a broken jaw from the first round Victor actually fought well and this loss means his huge fight with Canelo will no longer happen.
