Image: Mayweather: I'm going for the kill when I see Cotto's bloodBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. expects to see WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s red blood dripping off of his face at some point in the fight, and when that happens, Mayweather says he’s going to rip into Cotto to quickly finish him off in front of the 20,000 fans at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather said “On may 5th, blood has got to get drawn. [from Cotto]. I’m going for the kill. If I see blood, its motivating me even more, because I want to see more blood.”

Mayweather is mentioning blood because Cotto has a tendency to swell up and cut when he’s facing good opponents rather than easy setup fights by his old promoter. Cotto gets cut and he seems to get flustered, and fights horribly. Mayweather seems to specialize in taking apart bleeding opponents, he really goes for the kill when he’s got a guy hurt and on his last legs.

I can see Mayweather like a killer white shark as he attacks the bleeding Cotto tonight, if Cotto does end up getting cut up. I think it’s almost a given that we’ll be seeing Cotto’s blood at some point in that fight, and when that happens the end will be near for the Puerto Rican star. He won’t be able to vend off the incoming shots from Mayweather, and I suspect Cotto will drop to a knee to get the beating over with rather than continuing to take the big shots from Mayweather.

Don’t get me wrong; Cotto has a real chance to win this fight. He’s younger, stronger and more suited towards a slugging war than Mayweather. Cotto has been fighting that kind of fight all his career, and Mayweather Jr. is kind of new to this type of fighting. Mayweather only recently started slugging when he legs started to go due to age. He’s done well so far, but the guys that he chose to slug with – Shane Mosley and Victor Ortiz – were perfect for him.

Mosley was old and shot; while Ortiz simply crumbled mentally when the going got a little tough for him. Had Ortiz remained his composure when things were going bad for him, he might have been able to make it a lot tougher fight for Mayweather. I’m not saying Ortiz would have won, but I think he would have made it a lot more interesting fight. Cotto has to keep it together mentally when he starts getting punished because Mayweather will destroy him if he starts retreating when things go badly.
