Image: Khan expected to announce his July 7th opponent next weekBy William Mackay: Amir Khan and his promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions are expected to make an announcement next week about Khan’s next opponent. Khan is will be fighting on either July 7th or the 14th against possibly WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia.

This comes after Khan’s previously scheduled fight against IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson was cancelled due to Peterson failing a drug test for performance enhancing drugs. For that issue Schaefer is looking to get Khan’s loss to Peterson from last December ruled a no contest by the IBF, WBA and the Washington, DC State Athletic Commission. Schaefer also wants Khan’s IBF and WBA titles to be returned to him as part of this. So. in theory there would be three titles on the line if Khan faces World Boxing Council champion Garcia.

According to RingTV, the date their looking at for Khan to fight is on July 7th. The only problem with Khan facing Garcia is that Garcia is supposed to be defending his title against his mandatory challenger Ajose Olusegun. The only way that Garcia could skip past that fight is go get an exception by the WBC and/or give Olusegun a step aside payment so that Garcia could take the Khan fight. Obviously, HBO would rather see Khan face Garcia than seeing Garcia fight Olusegun because it’s a much bigger fight, although it’s still not much of a fight because Garcia is hardly a star and neither is Khan.

It looks like Khan is bent on looking to capture one more title at 140 before he moves up in weight to the welterweight division to try and get a fight against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Personally, I don’t se the point in Khan fighting Garcia. What’s the point when it’s not a big fight and it’s just wasting time that Khan could be using trying to get adjusted to the welterweight division, if he ever can. Garcia looked terrible in beating Erik Morales in his last fight, and there’s no real gain in beating him. If Khan is going to make a name for himself and make it appealing for Mayweather to fight him than he’s going to need to move up to the welterweight division and beat someone good, and not talking about 40-year-old Shane Mosley.

That seems like the obvious opponent that Golden Boy is going to spoon feed Khan after he moves up in weight, and it’s going to be a total joke when/if that happens. Khan needs to fight someone good that boxing fans actually care about, instead of looking to add an old scalp to his resume. But watch and see, it’s going to be Mosley that’s trotted out when Khan moves up in weight.
