Image: Groves wants to fight FrochBy William Mackay: Not satisfied with what he has on his plate with a rematch against Kenny Anderson (16-1, 12 KO’s) on June 30th, Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) wants to fight IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-1, 21 KO’s) in his fight after that.

Groves said to Talksport.co.uk “I’d love to fight him [Froch]. I had a chance to fight for the WBO title but it fell through. I’m trying to squeeze my way into the world title arena and obviously a fight against Carl in Britain would be absolutely huge.”

I kind of doubt that Froch will want to bother with facing the 24-year-old Groves because he’s still not faced anyone at this point in his career other than domestic level opposition. Groves’ best win of his four year pro career, a 12 round majority decision victory over British super middleweight champion James DeGale, was a highly questionable. At best, you could call that fight a draw, but honestly it looked like DeGale won the fight.

Groves was supposed to fight for the WBO title against 168 pound champion Robert Stieglitz. However, Groves suffered a nose injury while training for the fight and had to pull out of it. Instead of the Stieglitz bout, Groves now has to settle for facing the hard hitting Anderson in a rematch. It’s a huge let down you can imagine, but Groves is going to have to take his time if he wants to get to the world level.

Groves could really help himself if he made his fighting style more interesting to watch. He’s too much of a hit and run fighter and it’s not interesting. Groves needs to make his fighting style more exciting somehow, but it might not be possible. He’s not a big banger and that could be a problem for him against better opposition.
