Froch vs. Calzaghe. Who would have won?

Image: Froch vs. Calzaghe. Who would have won?By Mark Havey: It’s a fight that Carl Froch (29-2, KO’s 21) had been demanding for a while. Joe Calzaghe (46-0, KO’s 32) was the dominant champion who it seemed would never lose, and he never did. Froch was the youthful prospect calling out the bigger names at every chance.

He had faith in his capability to beat Calzaghe, but no one else did. Froch never achieved his dream, Calzaghe retired after a long and successful career.

Ringnewsonline are currently conducting a poll to see the public’s opinion on who would win if the fight had taken place. At the time of writing the results have Calzaghe in the lead at 79% and Froch with 21%.

Carl Froch has the heart and desire to win against whoever is in front of him. He would never give up during a fight and would fight to the death. His defence isn’t great but his antagonistic style means he often gives more than he takes. His chin is solid but he lacks skilful footwork.

Joe Calzaghe held the WBO title for 10 years and successfully defended it 21 times. He always threw a high volume of punches, landing most. Often they appeared to be slaps, but considering he had a decent knockout ratio, they must have been harder than they looked. Calzaghe also had a good chin and his skills were inspiring at times. He could be diverse and although he beat some good opponents, his record is littered with boxers who didn’t merit a shot at his title. He comfortably defeated Kessler, who has beaten Froch.

My conclusion is that Joe Calzaghe would beat Carl Froch, probably via UD. Calzaghe’s career has been to spectacular and he has too much experience , even for the battle hardened Froch.

What does everyone else think?
