Alvarez, 21, hasn’t fought anyone even close to being as good as Williams. Alvarez defeated Kermit Cintron recently, but Cintron didn’t see like the same fighter he once was in that bout. The other guys that Alvarez has beaten recently – Matthew Hatton, Alfonso Gomez, Ryan Rhodes and Shame Mosley – simply didn’t have enough in the power department to keep Alvarez honest. Those were basically mismatches because Alvarez was not only younger than them, but also a lot stronger as well. That helped him breeze though those fights without taking much punishment.

Williams, 30, isn’t a huge puncher, but he’s got enough power to cause a lot of problems for Alvarez if Alvarez can’t get him out early. Williams still throws a lot of punches, and as we saw in Alvarez’s recent win over 40-year-old Shane Mosley, Alvarez is easy to hit.

If Williams can start fast like he did in his wins over Antonio Margarito and Winky Wright, he’ll build up a huge lead. Alvarez hasn’t fought anyone that can throw 80 to 100 punches per round like Williams can. Although Williams rarely gets up to 100 punches per round anymore like he did in the early part of his career, he can still average in the high 60s in punch output. That’s a lot of punches for a guy that connects a lot and has a bigger frame than the guys that Alvarez has fought in the past. a
