Image: Rios has to perform against Abril tomorrow night to keep alive hopes of a Marquez fightBy Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is really looking forward to a possible fight between one of his up and coming stars Brandon Rios and 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez on July 14th. This is the fight that Arum wants to put together at the Cowboys Stadium in the summer if both Marquez and Rios win their perspective fights on Saturday night.

There’s little doubt that Marquez will uphold his portion by taking care of inexperienced and little known fighter Sergiy Fedchenko in Mexico city in their split site $45 HBO televised pay per view bout. Marquez is much better than Fedchenko, and the only way that Marquez loses to Fedchenko is if he suffers an injury.

Rios may have more problems, because he looked badly weight drained on Friday in failing to make weight for the bout against Abril. Rios weighed in two pounds over the limit at 137 and then came in even heavier at 139 at his second attempt on the scales. What happened to Rios is anyone’s guess. He was supposed to have been working with a dietician to keep his weight down, but he missed it badly. Because of this, he won’t have a chance at the $50,000 cash bonus that was being offered by his promotional company, as well as a chance to win the WBA interim lightweight title.

Abril could give Rios a lot of problems if Rios is weakened from fighting to make weight. He looked a lot healthier than Rios at the weigh-in, and he’ll be strong tomorrow night. Rios will have to put back on a lot of weight, and it’s unclear whether he’ll have enough strength to beat Abril.

Arum wants Marquez to agree to fight Rios, because it’ll be a fight that will make Rios a star win or lose. Arum is going to have to do some convincing if he wants him to take the fight because thus far Marquez has been only talking about wanting to fight Manny Pacquiao and not Arum’s guy Rios. And who can blame him? Why should he do Arum a favor in going through hell in facing Rios when there’s no guarantee that he’ll win the fight. I sure as heck doubt that Arum will let Marquez fight Pacquiao again if he loses to Rios. And I doubt Marquez would want to fight Pacquiao after losing to Rios. Marquez want to avenge his defeat and he’d use up valuable time. I think he wouldn’t lose to him, but there’s always a chance there. He’ll definitely take punishment and that seems hardly necessary.
