Mayweather-Pacquiao from a business standpoint

Image: Mayweather-Pacquiao from a business standpointBy Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: On March 9th of this year, according to ESPN.com, Manny Pacquiao and his business advisor, Rex Salud, came up with a solution that would seem lucrative to make the mega fight with Floyd Mayweather happen. The winner would 70 percent and the loser would get 30 percent.

Floyd has said no to a 50/50 and offered Pacquiao a flat fee of 40 million dollars. I will let the children argue about who is scared of who. Quite frankly, any man who steps between those ropes, and risk his life whether we believe the opponent is cherry picked or not, is no coward. But back to the main point. While that offer looks juicy through the press, it’s no good on paper simply because Manny Pacquiao works for Top Rank. Any offers, deals, money splits decision making will come from Bob Arum or Todd duBoef.

Floyd Mayweather promotes himself and is his own boss. He has developed a relationship with Golden Boy Promotions and has been doing business with them for the past few fights. Floyd also stated in an interview with Bob Costas that he his deal set up to where he keeps 100% of his money that’s generated from his fights. So when everything is tallied up, Floyd pays himself right off the top because he manages his own career. After that, then he pays everyone else. In the case, of Pacquiao, Bob Arum gets his cut right off the top. Let me put this way. If I worked for Ford, and I told GM’s boss that they can have 70 percent of Ford’s profits, I would have to get the okay from my boss to make that offer. I can make all the offers I want, but at the end of the day, my boss says yes or no simply because I work for him. If I had my own business, then I can make that offer without talking to anyone.

So let’s say Arum and Floyd okayed 70/30 split, this means that both side are risking a whole lot in a potential 200 million grossing fight. Believe me, and I say this with the utmost confidence, Arum nor Floyd would ever invest in such a silly idea. They are in this business to make money not lose money. Both are not going to put together any business deal if they know they know there is a guarantee money. If Pac says he’s willing to take less money, then that means Arum gets less money. That’s not happening. If Floyd says he will take less money, then that means he gets less and his team gets less. So unless these three things happen; Arum and Mayweather says yes to the 70/30 split; Manny Pacquiao leaves Top Rank and uses MP Promotions; or Arum and Mayweather sit down and talk, then the fight won’t happen.
