It’s unclear why Maidana is switching to Garcia, but it could have something to do with Maidana’s recent one-sided 10 round unanimous decision loss to Devon Alexander last February in a fight in which Maidana lost by the scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 100-90.

Garcia also trains notable fighters Kelly Pavlik, Nonito Donaire, Brandon Rios and Mikey Garcia.

Maidana will be moving back down to 140 after having moved up briefly to the welterweight division for the Alexander fight. Maidana said he didn’t feel good at that weight and he certainly didn’t look good at all. Some of that was due to Alexander’s punch and grab technique, as Maidana was rarely able to get his shots off due to the constant grabbing by Alexander. However, Maidana likely would have been beaten soundly even if Alexander wasn’t grabbing him 10+ times per round in clinches. Maidana was too slow and didn’t have an answer to Alexander’s hand speed like Timothy Bradley did in his win over Alexander last year.

According to fightnews.com, Maidana’s advisor is interested in fights against the likes of Danny Garcia, Michael Katsidis, Humberto Soto, Lucas Matthysse. Undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn are very interested in trying to get Maidana over to the UK in order for them to get a notable name for Brook’s next fight in July. However, Maidana is moving back down to 140, and Brook is a legitimate welterweight. Maidana would still have a good chance of beating Brook because he doesn’t have blazing fast hand speed like Alexander and he typically doesn’t clinch very often. He wouldn’t be all over Maidana all night long trying to keep him from throwing punches, and it might be an interesting fight if Maidana can’t get anything else going.
