Image: Burns vs. Mitchell could be a domestic classic if it happensBy Dallan O’ Donnell: This summer we could be set for a British domestic world title fight for the ages. WBO champion Ricky Burns is rumored to be possibly be taking on Kevin Mitchell for the Scots world title. The fight would generate huge interest from the British boxing public so it makes sense to make the fight happen sooner rather than later.

Burns has looked very good in both his last two outings all be it against lesser opponents but Burns looks capable to mix it with the top contenders at the weight including Brandon Rios. But in Kevin Mitchell, Burns is getting the toughest possible fight available and surely his biggest test as a champion.

Mitchell is no easy opponent, once on course to take full control of the division and become the WBO champion but was halted when he faced hard hitting Michael Katsidis in his prime and was stopped in the 3rd round. Katsidis went on to fight then recognized champion Juan Manuel Marquez and he himself was stopped in the 9th.

Katsidis fought again for the WBO crown, this time against Burns and was totally outclassed. Burns was in full control from the outset, dominating the action and landing at will. Mitchell, after the loss to Katsidis, took a long hiatus from the sport which was ended when he fought then unbeaten John Murray in a clash that won’t easily be forgotten.

Mitchell stopped Murray in scintillating fashion and re-announced himself on the boxing stage. An easy 10 rounder against Felix Lora ensued and now finally talk of Mitchell challenging Burns for a world crown is long overdue. It is hard to predict the outcome of this bout if it is to happen.

If the right Kevin Mitchell turns up on the night, the same man who beat John Murray then you would have to fancy Mitchell. But Burns is the champion. The pride of Scotland and he will be hard bet, especially if the bout was to take place in Burns’ homeland. Burns is a slick hit and move fighter and often sets the pace in his fights.

With British boxing reputation at stake after all that has taken place in recent months a proper British tear up is needed to restore pride and show the world that boxing in Britain hasn’t lost its integrity. Follow me on Twitter @Dallan09
