Wladimir said “I’ll take two weeks off and then star getting ready for my next title defense against Tony Thompson, probably in June or July. I’ll keep you posted about the date and the place. And hopefully we’ll have as much interest as before in the Jean-Marc Mormeck fight.”

Wladimir already beat the 40-year-old Thompson by an 11th round TKO four years ago in a fight that saw a lot of clinching and learning by Wladimir. Thompson had a bad knee going into the fight and the constant leaning by Wladimir during the clinches took a lot of the energy out of Thompson until he eventually fell down during one of Wladimir’s clinches in the 11th round. Thompson was able to get back to his feet but he looked to be in pain. It was at this point that Wladimir went after him and was able to take him out.

When Wladimir talks about interest in the Mormeck fight, he’s not talking about it being an interesting fight. He means that amount of boxing fans that showed up to watch it live in Dusseldorf. There were over 50,000 fans that showed up to watch what turned out to be an ugly mismatch with Mormeck landing only four punches in four rounds of action. The Mormeck-Klitschko fight also brought in huge numbers in Germany with a reported 12 million homes having seen the fight. Wladimir is a huge star in Germany and it really doesn’t matter how he faces, as we saw last Saturday night. It was a terrible mismatch even before the first punches was thrown, as Mormeck came into the fight having struggled in his three fights at heavyweight after moving up in weight from cruiserweight in 2009.
