Image: Khan may have a tough time trying to get a Mayweather fight if he can't get by Peterson in their rematch on May 19thBy William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) thought he had his career all mapped out when he chose to defend his title against #1 IBF contender Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s) last December in Washington, DC. Khan, 25, thought he would simply beat Peterson and then move up in weight to the welterweight division and challenge WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) in a big pay per view bout.

Unfortunately, Peterson wrecked Khan’s vision thing by beating him by a 12 round split decision and thus putting Khan’s career goals behind schedule. Khan will now be fighting Peterson in a rematch on May 19th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. If successful in beating, Khan won’t be sticking around to give Peterson a rematch, but instead will move up in weight to try and get a fight against Mayweather at welterweight. However, Khan might want to reconsider his plans on moving up in weight unless he’s going to try and get a fight against his pal Manny Pacquiao, because Mayweather was turned off completely by all the holding and running that Khan did in the Peterson fight.

As quoted by the telegraph.co.uk, Mayweather said “In the past, Khan called out by name a few times. I saw the fight [with Peterson], but I think Amir Khan does too much running and too much holding. I feel he should have been disqualified.”

Boy, that’s the kiss of death if I ever saw it. When Mayweather tells you he thinks you run and hold too much, he’s basically saying your an undesirable opponent for him. He obviously doesn’t want to fight a guy that throws shots and then gallops around the ring sometimes going backwards while still running. And he likely won’t want a guy that shoves him over and over again when he does get in close or puts him in a headlock or grabs him around the back of the head and yanks him forward to where he’s in a bent over position like what Khan frequently did with Peterson when he was trying to throw punches.

If Mayweather won’t fight Khan, then there’s no reason for Khan to move up to welterweight because he already said he won’t fight Pacquiao. Sure, Khan can take on the winner of the Victor Ortiz vs. Andre Berto rematch, but it won’t be a huge fight, and it would be a dangerous one because Ortiz and Berto can punch.
