Hearn wants Groves stripped of British title by the BBBofC, so that Anderson can fight for it

By Sean McDaniel: Eddie Hearn, the CEO of Matchmroom Sports, wants British super middleweight champion George Groves stripped of his title for failing to defend against his mandatory challenger Kenny Anderson (15-1, 11 KO’s) and instead electing to fight WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz for the title. Anderson was supposed to fight Groves this Friday night, but Groves reportedly suffered an injury while sparring and can’t make the fight.

The unfortunate part is Groves is being linked with a title challenge of Stieglitz next, while Anderson has to wait until the smoke clears from that fight to find out whether Groves will fight him or vacate the British title. Obviously, if Groves can best Stieglitz for the World Boxing Organization title, then Groves will lose the British title. However, if Stieglitz beats him, which is what a lot of boxing fans see happening, then Groves will likely turn around and defend his domestic level strap against challenger Anderson.

Hearn told the scotsman.com “Myself and Stevie Woods have a meeting with the Board of Control tomorrow where we will ask the Board to vacate Groves’ title as he is reportedly poised to challenge for the WBA title.”

Hearn went on to say that if the Board does strip Groves of his title, Hearn will then put Anderson on the undercard of the May 26th fight between Carl Froch and IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute in Nottingham, UK. Anderson would then be fighting an opponent to be named later for the vacant British super middleweight title.

It sounds like a reasonable request on Hearn’s part because it seems unfair for Anderson to miss out on the Groves title fight due to an injury to Groves and then see him turn around and fight someone else for the world title while expecting Anderson to sit on the shelf cooling his jets. That doesn’t seem right for Anderson to be sitting idle.
