Guerrero-Aydin: Robert moves up two divisions to fight for WBC interim 147 pound title

By Jason Kim: Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) will be moving up in weight two entire divisions on July 28th to try and claim the interim WBC welterweight title against number #1 World Boxing Council contender Selcuk Aydon (23-0, 17 KO’s) in a fight in the 28-year-old Guerrero’s nearby city of San Jose, California.

This is a calculated risk by Guerrero in moving up in weight, because there’s no telling how well he’ll do at this weight. Guerrero has a slight advantage, though, because despite fighting at lightweight in his last three fights, he’s weighed in around the welterweight level making it not such a big deal to move all the way up in weight and actually fight at that weight.

The main difference for Guerrero is getting used to getting hit by bigger and stronger guys that he was at lightweight, super featherweight and featherweight. That’s the true test. Guerrero will be getting hit hard in this fight against Aydin because he’s one of the harder punchers in the division. Aydin isn’t a one-punch knockout artist, but he’s got the kind of power that wears an opponent down because he loads up with all of his shots and he’s just naturally strong. Guerrero has a big advantage in boxing ability but he’s going to be giving away a lot in the power department in this fight.

Guerrero is hoping to get a shot against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and by taking on Aydin for the WBC interim title, this is an excellent way for Guerrero to position himself to possibly get a shot at Mayweather. However, it doesn’t mean that Mayweather will turn his attention to facing Guerrero because without a national fan base in the United States, Guerrero isn’t an appealing opponent for Mayweather whether Guerrero beats Aydin or not.
