Image: Fury has to impress against Rogan in a no-win situationBy William Mackay: 23-year-old former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KO’s) has put himself in a no-win situation by taking on 40-year-old 6’2″ domestic level heavyweight Martin Rogan (14-2, 7 KO’s) on April 14th at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK.

Fury already made himself look incredibly bad in the eyes of a lot of UK fans by choosing not to fight his British title mandatory challenger David Price. Instead of facing Price, Fury gave up both of his titles by vacating them, causing a lot of fans, including Price to question his courage. And then instead of taking on a quality younger fighter, Fury turned around and agreed to fight the 40-year-old Rogan, who was beaten twice by Sam Sexton. Rogan looked old and small in the second loss to Sexton, and wasn’t a good performance at all from Rogan.

Time goes quickly and it’s already been three years since Rogan lost those fights. He’d older now and hasn’t faced a quality fighter since then. The time for Fury to have faced Rogan was back then before his two losses to Sexton, not now after those losses and three year of time having gone by. It just looks like Fury is looking for an easy payday rather than trying to climb the heavyweight ladder to improve and learn some new skills.

Fury will likely beat Rogan without too many problems but he won’t get any credit for having done so because of how old and rusty Rogan is. This is a fight in which Fury is almost guaranteed to take heavy criticism no matter how it ends up. If he loses, then boy he’s going to be laughed at and forgotten quick; if he struggles to win the fight, then he might be skipped over by the Klitschko brothers because he needs to not only win against an older fighter like Rogan but he’s got to win impressively to keep his stock relatively high. It’s already dropped because of him not facing Price but it can drop even further if he struggles or gets beaten by Rogan. Like I said, this is a no win situation for Fury.
