Joshua–Fury Friday Plan Makes Cardiff Even Worse

Moving Anthony Joshua’s fight with Tyson Fury to a Friday night would make an already dreadful Cardiff plan even harder on British fans. A stadium crowd leaving at perhaps 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. on Saturday would face limited transportation, packed roads and hours of waiting after paying premium prices.

Spencer Oliver said that he expects the fight to be announced this week, with December 4 or December 11 replacing the previously discussed November 28 date.

“I think we’re going to get December the 4th or December the 11th, which is a Friday night, with that landing at Cardiff, at the Principality Stadium,” said Oliver to talkSPORT Boxing.

Oliver suggested the Friday date would suit Netflix and the American market because of sporting competition on Saturday. The apparent trade is clear: British spectators get the fight on home soil, but the timing is designed around viewers thousands of miles away.

Principality Stadium has a roof, making it one of the few realistic UK stadium options in December. That solves the weather issue. It does nothing for supporters trying to reach their hotels or homes after a main event scheduled between 2 and 3 a.m.

Friday also forces many ticket buyers to take time away from work just to travel to Cardiff. They would then spend most of the night inside the stadium before being released into the city when public transportation is at its weakest.

Calling this a victory for UK boxing requires ignoring the people in the seats. They provide the atmosphere, buy the tickets, and pay the inflated hotel prices, yet their comfort is treated as the least important part of the promotion.

Joshua and Fury should have fought years ago when both were near the top of the heavyweight division. Fans are now being asked to endure an absurd timetable for the delayed meeting of two faded former champions.

Cardiff may be the final location, and Friday may satisfy Netflix, but neither makes a 2 or 3 a.m. fight reasonable. Putting the event in Britain means little when British supporters are treated like studio extras for an American broadcast.
