Eddie Hearn’s Cryptic Message Reads Like Gloating

Eddie Hearn has not explained his cryptic social media message, but it sure reads like him gloating after getting his way in the Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua venue battle. If Hearn is celebrating a Cardiff victory, his self-satisfaction comes at the expense of British fans facing a 2 a.m. ring walk and a miserable journey home.

“Lesson for the week people: if you truly believe in it, stay with it and keep fighting for it,” Hearn posted on Instagram in a message shared by EverythingBoxing. His graphic added: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

Hearn did not mention Fury, Joshua or Cardiff, so this cannot be treated as an official announcement. Still, the timing makes his meaning difficult to miss. He spent weeks resisting Madison Square Garden and arguing that two British heavyweights belonged in Britain. Now he is congratulating himself for refusing to give in.

It comes across as Hearn thumbing his nose at Dana White and TKO after winning the location battle. Unfortunately, the promoters will not be the ones dealing with the worst part of that decision.

A ring walk near 2 a.m. would send thousands of fans out of Principality Stadium around 3 a.m. on Sunday. After sitting for hours inside a warm building, they would step into the cold Cardiff night tired, half asleep and searching for a way home after normal public transportation has shut down.

Taxis would be scarce. Hotel prices would soar. Some fans would face long walks, hours of waiting or an expensive overnight stay after already paying for tickets, food and travel.

Hearn can leave in private transportation and celebrate delivering the fight to Britain. The ordinary customer gets the cold, the exhaustion and the scramble home.

That is what makes his motivational message so irritating. Keeping Fury vs. Joshua in Britain sounds like a victory until the schedule is designed around American prime time. Hearn gets the venue he wanted, while British fans are asked to absorb every inconvenience attached to it.

This is not a triumph for the paying crowd. It is a promoter winning an argument and leaving everyone else to find a ride home at three in the morning.
