Froch: I wasn’t myself when I lost to Ward; it was a close decision

Image: Froch: I wasn't myself when I lost to Ward; it was a close decisionBy Scott Gilfoid: I got a kick out of reading what former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch had to say about his loss to WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward last December when Froch talked about the defeat at his latest press conference with IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute to publicize their May 26th fight at the Nottingham Arena, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire.

Froch said this as quoted by fightnews.com: “Unfortunately, I lost a close decision against Ward; it was a very difficult awkward night for me. I wasn’t myself.”

Is Froch kidding or what? The Ward-Froch fight wasn’t anywhere close, although two judges had Ward barely beating Froch by scoring it an increible 115-113 and 115-113. One of the judges had his head screwed on right and scored the fight 118-110, which was more fitting for what actually good place in the ring on that night. I only gave Froch two rounds with one of them being a mercy round. He fought horribly against Ward and there was nothing in that fight that suggested that the fight was a close one. And as far as Froch saying he wasn’t himself on that night.

I fully disagree with that. Froch fought as he usually does with his arms dangling down low and coming forward all night long. The difference is Froch was facing TALENT and he was out of his league here. Ward schooled Froch and made him look bad. But this wasn’t unexpected because Froch was already beaten by Mikkel Kessler in the Super Six tournament and he received what a lot of boxing fans saw as a gift decision over Andre Dirrell in Froch’s first fight in the tournament in his home city of Nottingham in October 2010. In seeing those fights, I wasn’t surprised at all that Ward dominated Froch because he had already been handled by Dirrell and Kessler.

Now it’s Bute’s turn to do a number on Froch on May 26th. I give Froch a puncher’s chance to win the fight. He’s not going to outbox someone like Bute that’s for sure.
