By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is saying that he’s got some huge earth shattering news to break this Tuesday that supposedly will change the boxing industry. It sounds interesting but I can see it being something mundane like Golden Boy Promotions signing a contract with HBO or something like that. It might be a big deal for him but as far as changing the boxing industry, I kind of doubt it.
Here’s what De La Hoya had to say on his twitter: “Major announcement soon to come that will shake the boxing industry in a major way. I will announce on Tuesday.”
I can’t wait. Man, I just know this is going to be something silly that has little interest to most boxing fans unless you’re the type that can live vicariously through other people’s happiness. I don’t want to hear about how good De La Hoya’s got it because I already know the guy is filthy rich and set for life. I want to hear some news that will make a difference to boxing fans. It would be nice if the sanctioning bodies was shaken up a little. I’d like that. Other than that, they need to force the best fighters to compete against each other instead of hand-picking opponents 24/7 and driving the sport into the earth. I can’t see that happening either. I’d also like to see things like clinching turned into a foul that referees actually call because it’s taking away from the sport with all the grabbing that fighters do in order not to fight. They also need to take points away for running.
