Lundy decisions Williams; Ayala defeats Mitchell

By Jim Dower: NABF lightweight champion Hank Lundy (22-1-1, 11 KO’s) got by Dannie Williams (21-2, 17 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The final judges’ scores were 97-92, 97-92, 98-91. Lundy was knocked down in the 1st from a flash knockdown with his glove making contact.

Apart from that one glitch, Lundy was in control pretty much every step of the way tonight. Both fighters had very fast hands but so, so sloppy. Lundy clearly was the better fighter but it’s hard to see him beating the top lightweights in the division and a super featherweight like Adrien Broner would do a number on this guy. Williams just looked fast and that’s all. These are a couple of decent fighters on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights but it’s hard to see either of them ever winning a world title.

Middleweight Elvin Ayala (25-5-1, 11 KO’) defeated replacement opponent Eric Mitchell (23-9-1, 11 KO’s) by an eight round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 78-73, 79-73 and 79-73. Ayala, 31, was supposed to have fought Hector Camacho Jr., but he pulled out of the fight this week due to an injury.

Mitchell, 42, was a bit too long in the tooth to give Ayala any problems in the fight. He initially fought well in the first round landing some nice shots. However, Ayala kept a fast pace and was able to take control of the fight and dominate Mitchell with hard shots to the head and body, raking the older fighter with nice power punches at will. Mitchell hurt in the final round but was able to survive to the final bell.

Ayala wins his 5th consecutive fight, albeit all against 2nd tier opposition. Ayala lost back to back fights in 2009-2010 when he tried to step it up to 1st tier competition and was beaten by Lajuan Simon and David Lemieux. In 2008, Ayala was stopped in the 12th round by IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham.

Light heavyweight prospect Joe Smith Jr. (8-1, 8 KO’s) dominated the overmatched Dennis Ogbo (6-5, 5 KO’s), stopping him in the 2nd round with some big shots. The fight was halted at 2:06 of the round.

Undefeated featherweight prospect Shelito Vincent (2-0) defeated Karen Dulin (2-11, 1 KO’s) by a 4 round unanimous decision in female featherweight competition. The final judges’ scores were 40-36, 40-36 and 40-36.
