Image: Abraham-Wilczewski on Saturday in GermanyBy Allan Fox: WBO European super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (33-3, 27 KO’s) defends his obscure title on Saturday night against challenger Piotr Wilczewski (30-2, 10 KO’s) at the Sparkenhassen Arena in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Abraham is being matched against a tough opponent for the first time since losing to Andre Ward last year in May.

Abraham’s management must see something in Wilczewski’s style that give them a good idea that Abraham can stop this guy because Wilczewski has the potential to beat Abraham and spoil their plans on matching Abraham up against WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz.

Wilczewski can be blitzed early, as we saw in his 3rd round TKO loss to American Curtis Stevens in July 2009. That defeat is likely what Abraham’s management see in Wilczewski for them to pick him rather than another weak opponent for Abraham to look good against in beating. Wilczewski is coming off of a tough 12 round decision loss to James DeGale last October in a fight that a lot of boxing fans felt that Wilczewski deserved to win.

It was a really tough fight for DeGale, because Wilczewski was able to take his shots and come back with even harder punches of his own to get the better of DeGale in most of the rounds. Although Wilczewski lost the fight, you got to look at the the fact that the fight took place in the UK and it would have been difficult for Wilczewski to retain his title on that night.

Abraham needs to start quickly and throw a lot of punches if he wants to make this fight an easy one. If he only fights hard at the end of the rounds, then Abraham could lose because Wilczewski will be steadily working.

Wilczewski is the better skilled fighter of the two with more ways to win this fight than the limited Abraham. Wilczewski can outbox Abraham or he can put a hurting on him and possibly stop him. I’m not betting that happens but Wilczewski definitely has the power to take Abraham out if he switches into his seek and destroy mode like he had for the DeGale fight.
