Image: Abraham looks like easy pickings for Groves-Stieglitz winner(Picture: Photo Wende) By Allan Fox: Arthur Abraham (34-3, 27 KO’s) defeated Polish super middleweight Piotr Wilczewski (30-3, 10 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night to put him in the driver’s seat to get a fight against the winner of the George Groves-Robert Stieglitz fight whenever that fight takes place. Abraham was handed a victory over Wilczewski by the following scores: 119-108, 119-109 and 118-109.

Abraham won the fight based on his harder punches, better jab, a point deduction taken away from Wilczewski in the 7th for the use of the head, and the fact that he had Wilczewski hurt in the 11th round from some hard hits. Abraham, however, doesn’t look to be in the same league as Groves and Stieglitz, both of which have the offensive power and boxing skills needed to defeat Abraham by a 12 round decision. He’s still got the power advantage over both of those fighters, but he doesn’t have the skills or the workrate. Abraham did a lot of covering up tonight, just letting Wilczewski tee off with his best shots while Abraham stood, usually with his back against the ropes, trying to block incoming while getting a rest at the same time. In the rounds that Abraham did best, he often exhausted himself and needed to rest in the next rounds.

Abraham won’t be able to dominate Groves and Stieglitz the same way that he did with Wilczewski tonight, because Stieglitz and Groves both have good power and are decent counter punchers. That right there is going to be a serious problem for Abraham, because he struggled against the counter punching ability of Andre Dirrell, Andre Ward and Carl Froch in the Super Six tournament. He couldn’t deal with shots that were immediately fired back each time he’d throw one of his wild shots. Tonight, Abraham threw a lot of wild flurries with most of his shots missing badly. If he does that against Groves or Stieglitz, Abraham will be hit a lot with head snapping shots. I think he’ll give them a decent fight but will end up losing and losing badly.

Abraham really needs to hire a dietician and see if he can get back down to 160 because he’s really kidding himself by fighting at 168.
