Haye to Vitali: You’re old and realize you can’t fight me

Image: Haye to Vitali: You're old and realize you can't fight meBy William Mackay: David Haye did an excellent job of busting up the Vitali Klitschko – Dereck Chisora post fight press conference, interrupting the question and answer period and turning into a physical brawl with Chisora and his trainer Don Charles.

Before the brawl started, Haye repeatedly asked Vitali why he wouldn’t fight him now that the Chisora is over with. Vitali didn’t respond but his manager Bernd Boente did, saying “You had an offer. You didn’t accept it. Now you are out. You are out. Out, out, out. You cannot talk yourself back into the fight; you have no belts.”

Haye lost it completely at that point, saying angrily “Why won’t you fight me? You’re old and can’t fight. You realize you can’t fight me now.”

Haye now sees Vitali as vulnerable after his less than impressive performance against Chisora. It wasn’t vintage Vitali that’s for sure. Haye wasn’t this eager to fight Vitali before this fight, but after seeing Vitali struggle to beat Chisora, Haye is now very interested in the Vitali fight maybe even more so than he was for Wladimir Klitschko. Chisora made the mistake of confronting Haye at the press conference when Haye had a hungry look, wanting to land the Vitali bout and get the big money that comes with it. Haye didn’t waste anytime when Chisora walked up on him. He immediately nailed with a right hand that stopped any hopes of conversation.

I had a feeling that Haye would hit Vitali from this angle by talking about his age. There’s no question Vitali didn’t look all that sharp against Chisora. Vitali looked tired by the 5th round, and seemed to be worn down completely by the pressure from Chisora, which compared to pressure fighters from the past like Mike Tyson, it was pretty mild in comparison. But Vitali was looking gassed for much of the fight and had little power on his shots in the second half of the fight. Had Chisora been a more talented fighter with better hand speed, better accuracy, better work rate, he likely would have given Vitali a real run for his money and maybe even beat him. But Chisora didn’t throw a lot of punches and the ones he did throw often missed wide of the mark.

I think Vitali could still beat Haye, but it wouldn’t be easy because Haye is so much quicker than him. He could flurry on Vitali and put him down. I could see that happening.
