Cleverly says he’d still fight Hopkins even if he loses to Dawson

Image: Cleverly says he'd still fight Hopkins even if he loses to DawsonBy Scott Gilfoid: Supposedly, WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly is waiting to find out who the winner of the April 28th fight between 47-year-old WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins and challenger Chad Dawson before taking on the winner of that fight in the summer in Wales. However, now Cleverly is saying he’ll fight Hopkins regardless of the outcome of the Hopkins-Dawson fight. That’s great, eh? Pick the loser why don’t you.

Speaking with the southwalesargus.co.uk, Cleverly said “Obviously it depends how the fight between Dawson and Hopkins goes on April 28. If Hopkins gets badly beaten up, he may well retire. But if he loses it could still be a viable defence to have here in Wales. He’s the oldest champion in history, and an icon in the sport, and I’d love to have the ‘W’ against him on my record.”

So Cleverly wants to get a win over a beaten and faded Hopkins just to add a well known scalp to his resume? Man, is that superficial or what? That sounds weak to me. I wouldn’t go for that – to take on the loser instead of the winner just to get a well known scalp. It’s not like Cleverly wouldn’t be fooling anyone even if he could beat a near 50-year-old Hopkins. I got an idea. Why not Cleverly face the winner and that’s going to be Dawson. Why not do the right thing and fight Dawson and show the boxing world what you’re made of? I think I smell some fear. Can you imagine what Dawson would do to a wide brawler like Cleverly? I mean, I don’t think Dawson would ever go to Wales to take the fight, but even if he did, he’d take the judges out of the fight by clowning Cleverly for 12 rounds. Cleverly has a good chin, so I can’t see him getting knocked out but I can see him losing every round of the fight if you want to call it that.
