Image: Arce needs to beat Parra on Saturday to get Donaire fightBy Dan Ambrose: 33-year-old Jorge Arce (59-6-2, 45 KO’s) has a vitally important bout for himself this Saturday in a rematch against Lorenzo Parra (31-3-1, 18 KO’s) in a 10 round scheduled bout at the Palenque del FEX, Mexicali, Baja, Mexico.

Arce has to win this fight to get his payday bout against WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire in 2012. There’s still a better than average chance that Arce can still get the payday fight against Donaire even if he loses to Parra, because Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum could possibly match Donaire against Arce anyway knowing that a lot of Mexican fans will want to see it even with Arce coming off of a loss.

Arum doesn’t have a lot of options at super bantamweight for Donaire because there’s just so few marketable stars. The WBA champion Guillermo Rigondeaux doesn’t have a fan base and would likely beat Donaire if given the chance. Arum probably won’t ever give Rigondeaux that chance, and he definitely won’t let him at Donaire right now before any real money fights have been made.

Arce is a money fight for Donaire and Arum, and that’s probably the one that will happen win or lose for for Arce’s next fight. The reason I’ve been mentioning all this is because of how horrible Arce looked the last time he fought Parra in September 2010.

The fight was scored a 10 round draw, but I had Parra winning it by four rounds. Maybe that’s what it takes get a draw with a star like Arce. You got to dominate him by four rounds to earn a draw and possibly a lot more to get a win.

I think Parra is the better fighter with more in the tank and better technique than Arce. The thing that is going in Arce’s favor will be that it’s a short 10 round fight so that if he starts to fade like he did the last time he fought Parra, he won’t have a couple of extra rounds to lose.

I think Arce is going to get destroyed by Donaire if and when he gets to that fight. Hopefully, Arce will make the right decision afterwards to move back down in weight or retire. He doesn’t belong at bantamweight or super bantamweight. He can beat some guys, but he won’t beat Donaire and he won’t beat Vic Darchinyan, Abner Mares, Rigondeaux, Toshiaki Nishioka, Joseph Agbeko or Yonnhy Perez.
