Image: Guerrero deserves the Mayweather fight but may be overlookedBy Dallan O’Donnell: Considering all the hardships that Robert Guerrero has had in his personal life outside the ring, it is about time the two time world champion gets that one big fight with a big purse that has alluded him throughout his career. He continued his Boxing career to help pay off his wife’s medical bills after her life and death battle with cancer and has continuously cared for her when he is not competing. It would be truly deserved if Guerrero was to get a fight with the business cash cow, Mayweather.

Mayweather has already narrowed his list of possible opponents which he will name sometime next week to two fighters, one being Robert Guerrero the other being the young unbeaten, Saul Alvarez. From a promotional point of view the Mayweather camp has done brilliantly. Choosing two Mexicans to possibly fight in Las Vegas on Cinco De Mayo- a huge date in the Mexican calendar, it is money- making genius.

Guerrero has already spoken about the possibility of fighting Mayweather saying he will represent the Mexican community with honour, and he will shock the world to become the first fighter to beat Floyd. He has the talent to beat Mayweather there is no question. But he does cut and mark up easily which could be a problem with Mayweathers’ crunching right hands landing to the face. Another problem for Guerrero would be the weight. He currently fights between 135-140 pounds and has never fought at 147 which is Mayweather’s natural fighting weight. Guerrero would have to step up two divisions to meet Floyd.

Alvarez on the other hand is heavier than Floyd and currently holds the WBC Light middleweight title and is the pin up Mexican star. He would be commercially the smart choice in terms of revenue and ticket and PPV sales.

Hopefully however Mayweather picks Guerrero. He deserves this shot at this point in his career. Alvarez has time on his side he is after all only 21.

Guerrero has stated that if he was to get this fight, he would donate a large chunk of his purse to Cancer research. That alone shows the type of man he is. Follow me on Twitter: @dallan09
