Arreola vs. Molina on 2/18: Why did Showtime approve this fight?

Image: Arreola vs. Molina on 2/18: Why did Showtime approve this fight?By Dan Ambrose: No.1 WBC ranked heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (34-2, 29 KO’s) is fighting yet another mismatch next month on Showtime against former cruiserweight Eric Molina (18-1, 14 KOs) at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

We’ve seen Arreola fight six consecutive second tier heavyweights since being outclassed by Tomasz Adamek in April 2010, and now Arreola is facing a fringe contender in the 6’5” 229 pound 29-year-old Molina next month.

I don’t see any progress with Arreola’s career. He’s ranked high but not fighting anyone that can improve him as a heavyweight. Molina is just the latest of the soft fodder opponents Arreola has been facing. I saw a few of Molina’s fights on Youtube and I was completely unimpressed by him and don’t have a clue why the WBC decided to rank him #11.

The guys that Molina has been beating to build his resume have records like 14-30, 8-14, 6-5, and 9-15. There is a lot of very soft opposition on Molina’s resume and I can’t believe that Showtime approved of this mismatch because it’s set as the main event.

Molina doesn’t have the power, defense or the movement needed to keep him from getting knocked out immediately. Against weak opposition, Molina was getting hit cleanly with right hands and the crowds were screaming in awe of his opponents. Although Molina has beaten most of the guys he’s been in with except for one, he doesn’t look like he deserves to be ranked #11 above guys like Odlanier Solis and Dereck Chisora.

Those guys would have Molina for breakfast. It wouldn’t be a fight, because doesn’t have the skills or the power needed to be given a fight on Showtime. I thought the network was a little more on the ball than this.

Arreola will get another shot against the Klitschkos in the near future and he’ll lose badly. He’s made sure that he’ll get another shot because he’s faced noting but weak opponents. I guess Arreola learned a lesson after getting beaten by highly ranked contender Adamek and has decided to make sure he fights only guys he knows he can beat so he can get another title shot.

He’ll that title shot but he’ll be just as bad off as he was in the first fight he’s not fighting anyone so that he can improve. I don’t see the Molina-Arreola fight as being worthy of Showtime. I see it as the first fight on a Friday Night Fights ESPN2 card, and definitely not the main even because it’s a slaughter walking in the door.
