Image: Pacquiao's dismal performance against Marquez makes it tough to ask for a 50-50 deal with MayweatherBy Chris Williams: It may be a shock to some Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO’s) coming out today on his 33rd birthday and stating that he’s willing to take a smaller percentage to make the fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2012, but I think Pacquiao really has no other choice in light of his horrible performance in winning a controversial 12 round decision over 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez last month.

Pacquiao won the fight by a 12 round majority decision but Marquez looked to be the winner of that fight. And Mayweather easily beat an even younger and better version of Marquez two years ago without controversy by beating him by the scores of 120-107, 119-108 and 118-109. It was a complete mismatch from the opening bell, as Marquez was too slow and not skilled enough to compete with Mayweather.

Maywether would have likely laughed Pacquiao and Bob Arum out of the building if they came at him asking for a 50-50 deal after Pacquiao’s latest battle with Marquez. It would be too laughable and I guess Pacquiao was wise enough to see this for himself, although his promoter Bob Arum has yet to speak. One can imagine that Arum is still firm in wanting a 50-50 deal with Mayweather, and I can see that causing the fight to never happen.

You can’t ask for parity when your fighter is winning controversial, some gift – decisions against guys that Mayweather is easily beating. You got to come better than that. Pacquiao should be happy getting a 40-60 deal with Mayweather right now, and it might get worse if Pacquiao struggles to beat whoever Arum lines up for him next from his Top Rank stable. Pacquiao needs to try and fight Mayweather as quickly as possible before get wins another controversial decision, making it even harder to ask for a decent percentage.
