Image: McCracken: Froch wants to recapture his titleBy William Mackay: Trainer Rob McCracken sees his fighter Carl Froch (28-2, 20 KO’s) bouncing bag from his disappointing 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s) and coming back to recapture his world title next year.

Speaking with the BBC, McCracken said “His slow start, and he just wasn’t getting off sharply enough…I think his next ambition is to be three-time world champion…He wants to come back and try and reclaim his title, and there’s no saying that he can’t do it, as he’s shown in the past.”

In the past Froch lost his World Boxing Council title to Mikkel Kessler last year. Froch was only able to get the belt back after Kessler vacate the title due to an eye injury. Froch then won the vacant belt in a fight against a very limited Arthur Abraham. It’s a whole different kettle of fish to ask for Froch to turn around and face Ward for a second time and try and beat him.

I don’t see it happening and I don’t think it’s good use of Froch’s career to waste time on trying to win that fight. Besides, Ward isn’t going to fight Froch anytime soon and by the time Froch does eventually get another fight against Ward, Froch will likely be 36. He’s 34 now, and needs to go after a softer target like the winner of the April fight between WBO champion Robert Stieglitz and Kessler. Either take that fight or try and go after IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute.

I can’t see Froch winning that fight unless he wears Bute down with pressure and hurts him with something big. One advantage that Froch would have in the Bute fight is that Bute doesn’t throw a lot of jabs like Ward. The only thing Froch would have to be concerned with is taking Bute’s big shots and beating him in a war. It’s nice easy to trap Bute because he hits and runs when he’s facing big punchers, so he won’t just stand there. He’ll constantly be hitting and retreating, and likely frustrating Froch.
