Adamek, 35, looked badly overmatched in getting taken out by WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in the 10th round last September. Adamek tried his best but was too weak and too small for Vitali and ended up getting crushed in a one-sided fight. Adamek already beat Arreola by a 12 round majority decision last year in April. However, Arreola was heavier at that time at 250lbs and he’s since taken off 10 pounds and is fighting more effectively, winning his last six bouts against Manuel Quezada, Joey Abell, Nagy Aguilera, Kendrick Releford, Friday Ahunanya and Raphael Butler.

But what may appeal to Adamek most of all about Arreola is his ranking. He’s ranked high in the heavyweight division at #1 WBC, #3 WBO, #4 IBF, #10 WBA. In contrast, Adamek is only at #7 WBC, #10 IBF. He needs to be ranked higher to get another shot at Vitali, not that anyone wants to see a fight between the two of them again.

But if Adamek can get ranked high enough he can literally force Vitali to give him another fight. But Adamek also wants to be ranked as high possible to be poised to fight for the WBC title once Vitali retires in a year or so. In addition, Adamek would like to fight Vitali’s brother IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, and a win over Arreola or Mitchell may be all that’s needed for Adamek to get a nice little payday against Wladimir.

Of course it goes without saying that Adamek will lose to Wladimir, but he’ll get a payday, which is good for Adamek. He’s not big enough to compete with either of the Klitschkos and it’s unlikely that he’ll be an in shape Arreola. He was staggered several times by Arreola in their fight last year and that was with Arreola fighting with mainly just his right hand after he injured his left in the 2nd round of the fight.

My guess is Adamek will try and get the Mitchell fight rather than Arreola because it’s a much more winnable fight for Adamek. Mitchell, 6’2”, has looked decent against 2nd tier opposition but he’s not very big and he’s very beatable, especially against a guy that likes to punch and run like Adamek.
