Image: Pacquiao now saying he'll fight Sergio Martinez at 150 lbsBy Chris Williams: After recently saying he’d fight former WBC junior middleweight and middleweight champion Sergio Martinez at 147 pounds, Manny Pacquiao has suddenly changed his tune by saying in an interview at esnewsreporting that he’d be open to fighting Martinez at a 150 pound catchweight.

Now before you get excited about this you have to realize that this is Pacquiao talking and not the one that does the matchmaking for him, Bob Arum. It doesn’t matter much what Pacquiao says if Arum isn’t going to go along with the program and make the fight happen.

Do you think Arum is going to put his gravy train fighter Pacquiao in with a brutal slugger like Martinez? Nope! It’s not going to happen in this lifetime unless Martinez suddenly stops winning and/or starts looking more vulnerable. We’re talking a lot more vulnerable.

I know Martinez looked terrible in his fight against challenger Darren Barker earlier this month, but Martinez still took the guy out in the 11th round. Arum won’t risk Pacquiao with Martinez because Martinez can still punch.

Pacquiao is being matched against old guys at present. We just say him fight 40-year-old Shane Mosley, and now we’re seeing him fight 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez next month on November 12th.

After that, Arum will likely have Pacquiao fighting in house fights against Timothy Bradley, Mike Jones and Miguel Cotto for 2012. There won’t be any room whatsoever for a slugger like Martinez, even though he’s easily the best fight that Arum could fight for Pacquiao apart from a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Martinez would knock Pacquiao out if they were to fight. Pacquiao can fight only one way and that’s by going right at his opposition. Against a hard puncher like Martinez, it would be like bringing the food to a shark. It would be too easy for Martinez. Pacquiao is terrible at moving and he’d have to start running for the first time in his career and it obviously wouldn’t work.
