Image: Wladimir vs. Mormeck on December 10th in Dusseldorf almost done!By Dan Ambrose: With most of the top relevant top 10 heavyweight contenders either busy or not interested in fighting IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s), he is looking to put together a fight against former cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) on December 10th in Dusseldorf, Germany.

It’s not a bad choice given how bad the division is right now. There’s really on a small handful of heavyweights that are even slightly interesting for Wladimir to fight, and he just finished beating the best of the bunch in David Haye last July. And the second best fighter Tomasz Adamek was easily beaten by Wladimir’s brother Vitali Klitschko. Mormeck’s biggest problem in a fight against Wladimir is his lack of height. At 5’11”, Mormeck is the size of a light heavyweight facing a super heavyweight. Mormeck will have major problems with Wladimir’s size and reach, and without long arms, Mormeck is going to get picked apart by Wladimir.

“If he [Mormeck] wants it, I will [fight him],” Wladimir said in an interview at Sports Illustrated. Mormeck, ranked #9 WBA, #12 IBF, #13 WBO, was one of the best fighters in the cruiserweight division from 2003 to 2007, winning the WBA and WBC cruiserweight titles. However, after losing to Haye by a 7th round TKO in November 2007, Mor,eck abandoned the division and moved up to heavyweight in December 2009 after a two year absence from the ring.

Mormeck has won his last three fights at heavyweight, beating Vinny Maddalone, Fres Oquendo and Timuor Ibragimov all by decisions. Mormeck doesn’t look nearly as impressive at heavyweight as he was at cruiserweight, but then again the money is better in this division, which is why he’s staying despite the fact that he’s been struggling against the 2nd tier opposition that he’s been put in with.

The choice of Mormeck has been met with a lot of criticism by fans, who see Wladimir as cherry picking with this move. However, Wladimir can’t fight heavyweight contender Robert Helenius, the tall 6’6″ unbeaten slugger. Helenius is still three, perhaps as many as four fights away from being good enough to take on one of the Klitschkos. Even then, Helenius looks to be fatally flawed due to his lack of hand speed, defense and poor ring movement. Heavyweight contender Chris Arreola may end up fighting Wladimir but not until next year in the spring.

As for now, Arreola is fighting on November against an opponent to be named later. Unbeaten Tyson Fury doesn’t want to fight Wladimir or Vitali now, and says he wants to develop more. This leaves very little choice for Wladimir but to take on an old fighter like 38-year-old Mormeck if Wladimir wants to stay busy and continue to fight off. It’s better that Wladimir is busy than it would be for him to sit around for six to nine months waiting for bigger fights.
