Why doesn’t Arum ever put Gamboa on Pacquiao’s undercards?

Image: Why doesn't Arum ever put Gamboa on Pacquiao's undercards?By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has the best fighter in the featherweight division in 29-year-old Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 17 KO’s), who is a star in the making and a fighter that is probably good enough to move up and dominate at super featherweight, lightweight and possibly light welterweight.

Yet casual boxing fans still hardly know who Gamboa is despite the fact that he’s already captured a title in the past at featherweight before being stripped of it for some unknown reason. Arum hasn’t been putting Gamboa on his number #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao’s undercard fights. That seems very self defeating if you ask me. Is Pacquiao supposed to be the only good fighter on his cards, is that it?

You’ve got a world class fighter that is basically unbeatable, and yet you don’t put him on Pacquiao’s undercards so that he can get some badly needed attention from the millions of casual boxing fans that typically purchase Pacquiao’s fights on pay per view.

Now why isn’t Arum doing this? He also isn’t putting Nonito Donaire’s fights on Pacquiao’s undercards. These two guys are easily the best two fighters in Arum’s stable other than Pacquiao, and he doesn’t show them on Pacquiao’s cards. Why is that? I can’t explain it, but I think it’s really stupid.

Just imagine how much more popular Gamboa would be right now if he had been fighting on Pacquiao’s undercard for the past three years. Can you imagine how many more fans Gamboa would have?

Just having him on Pacquiao’s cards would have helped the cards immensely because they’ve been pretty one-sided fight cards for the past several years, loaded with mismatches from top to bottom. From the main even with Pacquiao against recently beaten or old guys to the bottom with top level prospects facing no hopers. At least Gamboa would be a breath of fresh for the cards.

For boxing fans that want to see Gamboa fight, he takes on Daniel Ponce De Leon next week on Saturday September 10th at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This is going to be a great fight for Gamboa and for boxing fans. Gamboa is the second best fighter in boxing behind Floyd Mayweather Jr. in my book. But you’re still probably not going to be seeing him on Pacquiao’s undercards, though.
