Tony Jeffries defeats Paul Morby, looks horrible

By Sean McDaniel: Light heavyweight prospect Tony Jefries (9-0-1, 6 KO’s) once again looked terrible in taking on a lower level fighter on Saturday night, defeating Paul Morby 6-7-1) by an unimpressive eight round decision at the Doncaster Dome, in Doncaster, Yorkshire.

Jeffries, 26, was looking too much for a knockout and failed to throw combinations the way he should have. Jeffries ended up eating a lot of punches from a fighter that he needed to dominate in order to show that he’s got the talent to make it to the next level. We recently saw Jeffries struggle to an 8 round draw against Michael Bambula last year in July, in a fight where Jeffries again had problems with his leaky defense.

Just like in tonight’s fight, Jeffries was loading up on everything and looking to score a 1-punch knockout. Jeffries’ power had no effect on Morby, and it’s bad he didn’t realize this and alter his game early on to win in a more smooth manner. Jeffries does decent power, but not like his trainer Tommy Brooks has been making him out out to be.

Jeffries needs to step back and focus on becoming a complete fighter, instead of a one trick pony. Jeffries kept throwing right hands and even against a limited fighter like Morby, it was too predictable. Morbdy adapted well to the one-dimensional aspect of Jeffries’ attacks and was able to block a lot of the shots. Morby ended up cut and bleeding from a head butt in the 5th. But even with the cut, he was making Jeffries look bad for the remainder of the fight.

Jeffries may need another trainer, someone that can teach him how to utilize his whole game instead of just one small aspect. He’ll never beat the top fighters at the world level fighting the way he is right now.
