As of now, there isn’t a definitive explanation for Matthysse pulling out. Steve Kim is saying it was an illness, but there’s also talk of a possible injury that Matthysse sustained during training that may be the root of cause for the pull out.

At any event, Matthysse it out and a replacement opponent needs to be found and quick for Morales. Matthysse was a replacement for Jorge Barrios, a fighter that few boxing fans wanted to see fight Morales because Barrios wasn’t even a light welterweight. With the WBC light welterweight on the line for Morales, it’s going to cause a lot of anger if Morales faces a soft touch for this fight.

There are already a lot of boxing fans who wonder why Morales was given the opportunity to fight for the vacant WBC belt given that he lost his last fight to Marcos Maidana. That loss should have made Morales an unsuitable fighter to be be picked out to fight for the vacant WBC light welterweight title.

Having Matthysse out makes things a lot easier for Morales to win a 4th world title. It would have been tough for Morales to beat a young fighter like Matthysse, but with him pulling out of the fight Morales is in a good position to capture another title unless they find a quality opponent. In that case, Morales,35, will likely lose because he’s pretty beatable at this late stage in his career.
