Image: Froch: I've got to keep Ward at range and threaten him with my right handBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KO’s) has spilled the beans about his plans to try and beat WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KO’s) on October 29th in the Super Six tournament finals. Froch says he’s going to try and box Ward instead of going for a knockout like he’s been talking about.

The last thing that boxing fans would think of is Froch trying to outbox a boxer like Ward. That’s probably not the smartest thing to do but I hope that’s not all the ideas that Froch has to try an win because he’s going to look bad getting out-boxed by Ward.

Froch said this in an interview at Sky Sports: “I’ve got to lot of range on it and I punch harder than him. If I can keep him at range and every time he steps in just threaten him with a right or land a right hand whatever on the body, shoulder or side of the head, then I’ll dictate the fight.”

It sounds rather hopeless to me, like some wishing to win the lottery or something. Froch isn’t going to detract a former Olympic Gold Medalist like Ward by threatening him with his weak right hands while shooting out a slow, easy to duck under jab from time to time. This is going to be so easy for Ward to duck or block the jab, move quickly inside, avoid Froch’s slow right hand and start battering him in close. You can repeat this pattern every time Froch gets a bit of daylight between him and Ward. He won’t be able to keep on the outside because no one does. He has such a fast first move and he’s on you so quickly. It’s like lightning. It’s unstoppable. The only beat Ward is to be an even an even better inside fighter than him, and also have amazing outside boxing skills to deal with him when makes adjustments to take the fight to the distance. Froch isn’t a great outside fighter and he’s terrible inside fighter. He’s really overmatched here.

“Plan A is to hit and not get hit, use my jab and box and move, but if it comes down to it, I’ll put it on him, push him back, take him into deep watter and put him with some heavy shots,” Froch said.

I kind of doubt. Froch’s Plan A will surely fail because he will get hit and get hit a lot. Plan B is just as useless, because he won’t be able to slug with Ward and will only get beaten up if he tries that.
