Image: Does Cano´s ranking legitimize Erik Morales fourth division title?By Gerardo Granados: Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda – Boxing organization rankings are tricky, you can see some absurd rankings all the time, it is not new and maybe it will never change. But can the WBC ranking of Cano on number twelve legitimize Morales as an “authentic” four weight division champion?

Cano was highly ranked but did he deserved to be ranked as number twelve without previously have defeated top quality opposition or even have ever defeated a top ranked fighter. Maybe this fight should have been sanctioned as a ten rounder bout due the lack of talent of one of the contenders to the title.

Does the reader consider that Erik Morales achievement can be compared to Roberto Duran´s victory over the defending champion Iran Barkey (former WBC middle, IBF super middle & WBA World light heavy / title fight record W3-L6) when he conquered his fourth crown; was Cano as good as the defending and former two time WBC light heavyweight champion Dennis Andries (title fight record W6-L3) when Tommy Hearns won his fourth crown; was Cano as experienced as Pernell Whitaker was (former WBC – IBF – WBA World lightweight, IBF light welter, WBC welter & WBA World light middle / title fight record W19-L3-D1) by the time Oscar De la Hoya defeated him and won the WBC welter belt? Was Cano the defending organization champion as Julio Cesar Vazquez was (former two time WBA World light middle / title fight record W12-L2) when Pernell Whitaker won his fourth division title? Was Cano as skilled as Zab Judah (former IBF – WBO – WBC – WBA Super World light welter & WBC – IBF – WBA Super World welter / title fight record W11-L7) was when Floyd Mayweather defeated him to win his fourth crown? Does Cano will be as good Juan Manuel Marquez was by the time he lost his WBC super feather belt to Manny Pacquiao when Pacman won his fourth division title?

Is Morales an authentic four weight division champion?

After all the turmoil around the World Boxing Council decision to strip Tim Bradley (now champion in recces) and the illness of Matthysse who was the main factor that could have legitimize the fight as a title bout caliber, promoters end up picking a limited young inexperienced fighter, who was tailor made for Morales to beat.

Maybe if Morales defeats Tim Bradley or a top division contender he could be recognized as a legit light welter champion, but probably not until then.

I hope Cano does not gets scheduled in any other mismatch in the future, he is brave but he should be aware that he need to learn a few tricks before engaging against a future hall of fame member.

Even in Mexico at a couple of boxing blogs Mexican fans does not recognize Morales victory as a true achievement and some believe he was gifted the title. But who is to blame?
