Image: Adamek wants to fight Haye after a tune-up boutBy Dan Ambrose: Tomasz Adamek (44-2, 28 KO’s) is interested in fighting former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) in 2012 on HBO if Haye doesn’t fight WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko next. Adamek wants to take a tune-up fight before he would be willing to take on the 30-year-old Haye.

Whether Haye will bite on an offer for a fight against Adamek really comes down to what happens in his attempts to get a payday bout against Vitali. If Haye can get Vitali in the ring, Haye will make huge money and won’t need a fight with Adamek at this time. But if Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko opt to fight better heavyweights, then Haye will have to settle for a fight against the smallish Adamek.

I think Haye would destroy Adamek because of his power and hand speed. Adamek, 6’2″, wouldn’t have the size or the reach to keep Haye on the outside. Once Haye starts landing his shots, I think he’ll quickly stun Adamek and then flurry on him to get a stoppage. If guys like Michael Grant and Chris Arreola can hurt Adamek, then Haye will likely put Adamek on a gurney.

This would be a good fight for both Haye and Adamek, because neither of them are good enough to beat the Klitschkos, but this way they could still get a nice payday without having to work for a rematch against the huge Ukrainians. Adamek was stopped by Vitali in the 10th round on September 10th. Adamek rarely landed anything in the fight other than jabs, and was hurt on a number of occasions in the fight. Vitali was so much better than the small Adamek that it looked as if Vitali was fighting a cruiserweight instead of a legitimate heavyweight contender with a number #1 ranking by the WBC.

Haye also looked much too small to compete with IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, and spent a good portion of the fight just trying not to get nailed. In the end, Haye took a safety-first approach to the fight by running instead of trying to go after Wladimir and make it a fight.

Adamek better move quickly if he wants to try and get the Haye fight before Vitali does. Right now, Vitali is taking his time and letting Haye wait. Adamek could take advantage of Vitali’s lack of movement on this fight by trying to line up a Haye fight first.
