Wladimir could face Mariusz Wach in November

Image: Wladimir could face Mariusz Wach in NovemberBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) is considering facing little known Polish fringe contender Marius Wach (25-0, 13 KO’s) for his next title defense in November, according to the latest boxing news. It sounds like a terrible mismatch, much, much worse than if Wladimir were to have taken on guys like Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora.

The 6’7″ Wach has the size, but his handspeed and ring movements have to be described as glacial. He’s very slow and pretty much only has one weapon – a slow looping right hand. No jab, no left and not much else. This will be a slaughter. I can’t see Wach even beating a top 10 heavyweight, let alone the number #1 heavyweight in boxing. Wach obviously is being considered because of his recent 4th round knockout over a badly out of shape 296 pound, 38-year-old Kevin McBride last week.

Some boxing fans see that as a great accomplishment, forgetting that McBride had previously been stopped in the 2nd round by 2nd tier heavyweight Mike Mollo, and in the 3rd round by Matt Skelton. Even Andrew Golota stopped McBride. Beating McBride shouldn’t be a test that one has to get by to get a fight with one of the Klitschkos. Tomasz Adamek also beat McBride in his last fight, and now he’s facing WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on September 10th. Is this a joke or what?

The 6’7″ Wach would be no test whatsoever for Wladimir. In terms of size, yes, Wach would be around the same height and weight as Wladimir. However, the differences in ability and athleticism would be scary. Wach moves like he’s stuck in quicksand and without a jab in his tool kit, he’s a knockout waiting to happen. If I were to pick out one of the worst possible opponents for Wladimir to be fighting in November, Wach would be very high on my list. I wouldn’t say he’s No.1 because there are some truly awful heavyweights ranked in the top 15 in the division, but he’s right up there with the worst in my views.

I don’t see this as fight that would interest HBO in the U.S. Wladimir has been saying he wants to fight his next bout in the United States. I can’t see HBO wanting to show this mismatch. Wach has not much of a fanbase in the U.S, and HBO would be making a huge mistake of showing this fight. Wladimir could sell the fight in Germany or maybe Poland, but then again he could sell any fight in Germany and it wouldn’t matter.
