Mayweather 149, Ortiz 157.4 – WBC 30 day weigh-in

By Chris Williams: At Wednesday’s World Boxing Council (WBC) 30-day weigh-in, Floyd Mayweather Jr. weighed in at a light 149 lbs, which is only two pounds off from the 147 pound welterweight limit. His opponent WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz came in at a heavier 157.4 lbs.

By looking at the differences in the two fighters’ weights, it’s pretty clear who the bigger man is going to be in their fight on September 17th. Mayweather will easily make 147 and will likely be still under the weight by fight time in their bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In contrast, Ortiz will clearly after to lose water weight to make the limit and then rehydrate afterwards. What this means is that Mayweather could be the equivalent of a welterweight fighting a middleweight on September 17th.

Before you ignore this take a look at how Ortiz’s size advantage helped him in his last fight against Andre Berto last April. After making the 147 pound limit, Ortiz rehydrated up to near 160 and looked huge compared to Berto. The extra size seemed to help Ortiz in that fight as he was a lot stronger than he was when he was fighting as at 140 lbs. in the light welterweight division.

I don’t know why the WBC has these 30 day weigh-ins. There’s got to be a value-add for them, and I guess it must mean some kind of extra money for these little weigh-ins. Why else why they conduct them? Seems kind of pointless to me and entirely not needed.
