Image: Guerrero vs. Maidana: Robert concerned with Marcos' powerBy Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) is very concerned with the power and the pressure that his opponent WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) likes to put on his opposition. The southpaw Guerrero is facing Maidana for the World Boxing Association “regular” light welterweight belt on August 27th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

Guerrero doesn’t want to find himself eating the big shots from Maidana and plans on using his boxing skills to try and avoid the big shots from the hard hitting Argentinian.

“Even if he [Maidana] gets knocked down, he gets back up and he knocks guys down,” Guerrero said in an interview at examiner.com. “He keeps coming and he has that will to win. He has that one punch gamer changer.”

Guerrero likely feels that he can out-box Maidana. However, it’s going to be tough to do for the full 12 rounds, as we saw in Guerrero’s win over Michael Katsidis. Guerrero has a good right hooks that he likes to catch his opponents with while their on the outside and trying to get in close. However, once Katsidis was able to get inside of Guerrero’s right hook, Guerrero had little in the way of offensive skills. Guerrero is basically an outside fighter with only one good weapon – his right hook. His straight left hand no longer is a weapon for him now that he’s moved up to the light welterweight division.

The power that Guerrero had at featherweight is completely gone now that he’s fighting at 140 lbs. He’s not going to slow Maidana down with a straight left and his right hook will only be effective if Maidana stays on the outside, which he obviously won’t do in this fight.

To be sure, Guerrero will be able to catch Maidana coming in with the right hook, but once he’s inside, Guerrero is going to have to take a certain amount of punishment before he’s able to get away. It’s not going to be case of Guerrero immediately running away without getting hit. He’s going to eat some right hands from Maidana. And if Maidana has watched what Katsidis was able to do to Guerrero when hurting him with body shots, that’s another area that Guerrero will have problems with. He can take a good head shot, but he seems to wilt when getting hit to the body.

Guerrero fights well when he’s the one doing the punching, but if you walk through his shots and punish him, as Katsidis was doing in the second half of his fight with Guerrero or the way that Orlando Salido was doing in his win over Guerrero, it changes the whole outcome. Guerrero seems to fight scared when he starts getting hit a lot. He’s not the same fighter. This is where Maidana can win. If he can take Guerrero’s shots while coming forward, get in close and work Guerrero to the body, Maidana will win.
